Quick answers. The ones people actually ask.

8 QUESTIONS · 1 MIN READ

Is Belgium worth visiting for English speakers?

+
Yes — English is widely spoken in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, and almost everyone under 50 is fluent. Signage in major cities is trilingual (Dutch/French/English) in tourist zones. You'll never struggle to order a waffle.

How many days do you need in Belgium?

+
We recommend 5–7 days for first-timers: 2 in Brussels, 2 in Bruges, 1 in Ghent, 1 for a day-trip (Antwerp, Dinant, or Ypres). 10 days lets you add the coast and the Ardennes.

What's the best time to visit Belgium?

+
May, June and September are the sweet spots — warm enough for terraces, long daylight, and fewer tourists than July/August. December is magical for Christmas markets if you don't mind the cold.

Is Belgium expensive?

+
Moderate. Budget $120–180/day (hotel + food + a tour). Beer is cheap (€3–5 for Trappist), train tickets under €15 between cities, and lunch menus start around €18.

Do I need a car in Belgium?

+
No — in fact, we recommend against it. The train network connects every city in under 90 minutes, parking is painful, and historic centers are pedestrian-only. Get a Rail Pass instead.

Brussels or Bruges as a base?

+
Brussels for museums, food, nightlife and wider connections. Bruges for picture-postcard canals, slower pace, better for couples. If you can, split your stay: 2 nights Brussels + 2 nights Bruges.

Is tap water safe to drink?

+
Yes — Belgian tap water is safe and high quality. Restaurants rarely offer it freely, though; you'll usually be served bottled water unless you ask specifically.

What's the tipping etiquette?

+
Service is included. Round up for good service or leave 5–10% at nicer restaurants. Taxis: round up to the nearest euro. Hotel porters: €1–2 per bag.
